That neonatal refractive (focusing) errors can be corrected through active, local regulation of eye growth is now well accepted, as is the role of vision in this emmetropization process. What defocus cues are extracted by the retina, the seeing layer of the eye, to guide eye growth, remains a mystery and a focus of some on-going research, along with a broader exploration of what aspects of the visual environment contribute to excessive (myopic) eye growth.
